Our National Bird Visits
Our Woods

Diana Baugus snapped this terrific pic behind 400. May very well be one of a pair of Bald Eagles (AKA "American Eagle") that have an established nest near the First Baptist soccer fields just off Ft. Johnson Rd. A new neighborhood was being built there when their gigantic nest was discovered in 2 pine trees at the end of a cul de sac. A protected preserve was established for the nesting area–the cul de sac is theirs. Speaking of preservation, eagle populations are recovering after being on the brink of extinction in the U.S. The species was removed from the U.S. federal government's list of endangered species on July 12, 1995 and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States on June 28, 2007.

Watch The Egret's Call for more about our magnificent Lowcountry Birds of Prey, coming next week.
